Teen Social Jusice Lesson Plan

For this lesson plan, I want students to recognize that that the teen years are a time where they can create their own identity while figuring out who they want to be, which is a positive thing. Social media intensifies the pressure to ‘fit in’, so they need to practice healthy habits to minimize that pressure such as limiting time on social media. Prior knowledge that I’m hoping to tap into would be students’ thoughts and feelings about social media and themselves, their interests, and prior artistic skills and knowledge such as painting and collage techniques. This will get them to personally connect to the assignment and jumpstart the ideation process for the project. I want students to learn about collage and painting techniques. They will be creating a mixed media representation of themselves and will be expected to demonstrate painting and collage techniques in their final project. I will show a project example or reference an artist that creates work related to the concepts discussed to get students to see the meaning in the lesson more clearly. The pre-assessment will be the answers to the initial questions as well as the discussion that follows. The formative assessments will be the ideation phase, where I determine what the students are thinking about for this assignment and what techniques they feel comfortable with. I will see how much they understand the concepts and requirements of the project by the questions they ask. The summative assessment will be the rubric they will be graded on. It will be based on how well they executed the assignment as well as the written reflection that goes with it. If students aren’t showing understanding of the lesson I will review it again so everyone can understand. Depending on how many students are struggling, I might do this individually or as a group. I feel very strongly about the way social media negatively affects kids and I also remember how difficult and confusing being a teenager was already. I want to give students tools to overcome challenges and become their authentic selves and feel good about that.
