Educational Lineage Project

There were many things that guided and helped shape through my educational journey. When I was a small child, art was almost exclusively the only subject I enjoyed. I found that one of the ways I could enjoy other subjects was if I could incorporate something artistic in my schoolwork. I slowly became obsessed with turtles and would write academic reports on them and got to make clay models depicting the different the species. It was a great way to learn about natural science and practice my artistic skills at the same time. Once I got older, I had teachers who encouraged me to explore my inherent creativity and I blossomed from a child who didn’t like school to an avid reader, storyteller, and artist. Once I got to high school, I learned to play guitar and was extremely interested in poetry. I would write my own songs, and even preformed one of them at a school talent show. It wasn’t surprising to my teachers and family when I decided to go to college for art, since creativity was always part of my drive.

Over the years I had many types of teachers. Some were supportive and enthusiastic, while others were rude and uncaring. I found that both of those experiences were valuable as they showed me what kind of person I wanted to be. As I grow as a teacher today I am reminded of these past experiences and strive to be the best I can be for my students, as the influence we have on them should be treated as the privilege that it is.

Process Work

As an artist, my favorite medium is digital illustration. I took a liking to it in college as I studied illustration. My favorite art art the illustrations I see in children’s books. You will see my creative process below.

First, I ideate about the concepts behind the piece I am making. For this piece, I reflected on my educational journey and the things that impacted me the most.

Third, I transfer my chosen thumbnail to my iPad and create a more refined drawing on top. I draw the line work and think about what colors I’d like to use for the final.

Second, I create thumbnail sketches of my initial ideas. I try to keep them simple, playing with different compositions.

Last, I color everything with my chosen brushes while paying attention to textures and staying true to my initial idea.
